This Keeperling has found their person and will not be made again.

Lord Benedict Cumberbat comes from a noble family and was, according to family legend, destined for a life of great importance.

He travelled widely, sampled an impressive number of delicacies, and eventually discovered that his wings no longer quite fit around his magnificent belly. He considers this a sign of success.

Benedict is serious when necessary, ridiculous when helpful, and deeply loyal to the humans he claims as his own. He has now chosen a particularly important post: keeping watch over the nurses who spend their days caring for people facing leukemia, treatment, uncertainty, fear, and recovery.

Presented in honour of Winston Woodington, Benedict does not belong to just one person. He was entrusted to the entire nursing team of the VGH Leukemia Ward as a tiny, chubby, winged thank-you from Harmony and her family for the skill, the watchful eyes, the kindness, and the humour that helped carry Winston through his leukemia journey.

By the Sacred Adoption Oath, his guardians agreed to provide a safe place to perch, reasonable access to snacks, occasional admiration, and forgiveness should he become excessively important before morning rounds.

If you watch long enough, you will notice

Takes important matters with immense solemnity right up until someone opens a snack, at which point his regal composure softens immediately.

What they reach for when the day is heavy

Good tea, excellent snacks, a safe place to perch, and exceptional humans who show up for the hardest work.

Look closely at

A round plush turquoise body with rich purple-lined wings, two tiny stitched fangs, glittering dark safety eyes, and a hand-crocheted royal ruby crown edged in sparkling gold thread and jewels.

What they understand, quietly

That caring reaches far beyond charts and medications, and that sometimes a ridiculous, chubby crowned bat can bring a genuine smile on the most brutal of days.

Who they seem to be looking for

Home forever with his nursing team on the VGH Leukemia Ward, keeping watch in honour of Winston.
